Life List #56

I did it...checked the first thing off my life list.

#56: Ride a horse on an ocean beach. Check.

The week before school started for the kids, we camped at the coast with a friend of mine and her son, who is Josh's friend. While we were there, Carley and I took a trail and beach ride on horseback. I didn't search it out but it presented itself to us. I took the opportunity to do it!

Although my family owned horses for a few years when I was younger, I was still a little freaked out at first. I didn't feel in control of the beast and I felt so high up.

We rode a trail through MacKerricher State Park to Ten Mile Beach. By the time we got to the beach I felt more comfortable on the horse.

Carley and her horse were led by the guide.

Carley has wanted to ride a horse for years. She occasionally asks. This time it worked out. She loved every minute of it.

I loved it too. It was such a great feeling to know I was able to share this experience with Carley. And it was an even better feeling to know that even though I may never cross every single thing off my Life List, at least I did one.

During our 4-day, 3-night stay in Fort Bragg we visited tide pools, saw seals, went to Glass Beach, played in the sand and the ocean, the boys made a fort, and we did all the other fun camping things like ate s'mores.

Here are some pictures of camping:

First Day of School

The kids started school this week. They're happy to be back so they can see their friends. They're not happy to be back because of the lack of fun time at home.

DSC_0160_1686
Carley just started 2nd grade. It's hard to believe; I still think of her as my baby!

DSC_0152_1678
Josh is now in 5th grade! This is the first year his elementary school is K-5th instead of going through 6th grade. Now he's top dog and next year is middle school!

For now we're adjusting to the school nights and mornings. So far, this year seems to be a harder transition moving from summer fun to school days. But we're pushing through. Not much else to do.

By the way, I've slacked on the blog the past couple weeks. We've been extremely busy with squeezing the last bit out of summer vacation. I'll post some goodies soon.

The Life List

Tahoe_0050-2-goldenrod

A few months ago I was talking to a friend about making a list of things to accomplish during our lives. And last week, I read this post on a wonderful blog about the list of things she wants to do before she "goes".

I was inspired. I call my list "the life list" because in between responsibilities and routines I love to live life.

This is a list of 100 things I'd love to experience in my life. Some can be done simply, with little planning. Some require me to get in good physical shape to perform. Some will take planning and lots of money to accomplish.

The main thing about my list, there isn't any pressure. If I do 10, 20, or 82 of the things on my list it'll help make me a more rounded person. Doing things on my list will help make me... well, me.

Oldies But Goodies

Lately I'm sick of my house. Same ol', same ol'.

Today I finally decided that I need to follow through with my year long plan to change the photos we have on the walls.

I think Carley is 3 years old in the most recent one. The newest of Josh is from 1st grade! (Can you believe he'll start 5th grade in just over a week!?)

So I quickly went through my computer and external hard drive to find pictures that make me smile, remind me of good times or I just plain love for no particular reason. I'm having them printed and I plan to hang them. At least most of them.

You've probably seen most of them before but here they are:

The only problem, other than it's so many, is that most of the pictures were taken in the past year or two. I need to fit some baby pictures in somewhere. But I'll leave that for another time.

There you have it. Finally I'll have new photos on my walls when you come to visit.

How My Garden Grows #3

The garden is growing and growing.

praying mantis
We had two, super small Praying Mantis in the garden.

praying mantis and fly
I haven't seen them recently but haven't searched for them either. I hope they're still in there keeping guard.

first red tomato
It seemed like I waited ages for the first tomato to turn red. One finally did on July 12th.

a handful
Since then, there have been regular tomato harvests.

picking away
We're harvesting probably 6-8 pounds of tomatoes each week now.

first tomato harvest 7-25-10
Cucumbers are doing well too. We have enough to support our minimal cucumber habit. In fact, there are three large ones waiting to be picked right now.

pumpkin and spaghetti squash
We have a pumpkin growing. The seeds came from a pumpkin the kids carved at my mom's house last Halloween (seen in this post).

going and going
The sole spaghetti squash plant is all over the place!

"jackpot!"
We have this one growing in the tomatoes. Carley saw it one day and yelled "Jackpot!" She excitedly told me "we have a tomato this big."

squash harvested 7-25-10
We picked this one a couple weeks ago. I cooked it Monday. So delicious.

I'm so pleased with our first garden. Sure some plants didn't produce much, if any, but tomatoes, cucumber and squash keep me very happy.
