We took the main drive around a portion of the lake since we came in from the North entrance and left at the South entrance. We stopped at several pull-outs to get different vantage points. Each one was just as beautiful as the one before.
Liao Rock.
The kids spotted snow and insisted they wanted to play in it. Initially we saw some down the side of the steep hillside to the lake. Josh assured us he could make it down and back safely. We found some more easily accessible snow on the side of the road without cliffs.
(The mountain in the background is called Thielsen Peak. I like to think of it as Thiel Peak and they just named it wrong.)
There is only one trail to get down to the water. It's on the other side of the lake. From what I read, the trail drops 700 feet elevation over the course of 1.1 miles. That's pretty steep. Too steep for Carley to walk back up. Maybe when the kids are older we'll stop back by Crater Lake and take the boat tour from the lake. I hear the water is icy but I'd be willing to give it a shot.
While at Crater Lake, Walt pointed out this in the sky.
A rainbow without rain?
I had to look it up online to see what it really is. From what I can tell, the straight one is a Circumhorizon Arc. They're not rare but this was the first time I've ever seen one.
The one around the sun, which did look like a faint rainbow, is called a 22° Circular Halo I think. It's cause from the sun shining through thin, wispy, cirrus clouds. Whatever they were they were beautiful. The photos really don't do them justice.
This is a view of Mount Shasta from near the Oregon border. We stay the night in Weed, CA, which is just to the side of Mt. Shasta. We had a view from the hotel pool but it wasn't as pretty as this.
